Is it ok to workout with COVID? Is it ok to workout while I’m sick? I’m on a roll with my workouts, if I stop will I be able to get my momentum back? These are common questions I’ve been getting as a fitness trainer and also as my trained profession as a pharmacist. With COVID-19 taking the world by storm while we are oblivious to the long term results it can have, COVID specific illness can be tricky to accurately answer these questions. I will try to help you make an informed decision if you are currently COVID-19 positive or dealing with some other illness by reading this post today.
How are you feeling? That’s the first question that needs to be answered. You need to listen to your body and respond accordingly. If you are a high intense exerciser, you might need to drop down to low intensity (i.e. Runners may need to walk). If you are reading this post, it’s probably because you pretty much never miss your workouts. Sometimes, you need to let your body rest. It can be as simple as how do you feel, as in how are you recovering BUT some instances will require you to totally take some time off. Here are a few pointers you can use to guide your decision making:
- Check your temperature! We should all have a thermometer on hand by now with COVID-19 touching most of our families in one way or another. If it’s over 101 degrees Fahrenheit then it’s a rest and recuperate day for you.
- Are your symptoms above the neck? Experts agree that if your symptoms are above the neck, think allergy related: sniffles (nasal congestion), watery eyes, sore throat and sneezing then you can stick with your workouts.
- Are your symptoms below the neck? Coughing (generated from below the neck), body aching (feeling like you’ve been hit by a truck), fever, unusually tired then you can sit this day out.
- You have COVID-19, does all of this apply? YES, with the consult of your doctor of course. I have had people who contacted me and continued to workout just fine with COVID-19 and then others who have been out for 2 weeks plus. If you don’t have symptoms, carry on. If you do have symptoms as mentioned above, act appropriately.
If you do return to the gym to workout, make sure to follow best practices that we are all VERY accustomed to at this point. Wear a mask or cover your mouth, wash your hands, use a towel on equipment, carry hand sanitizer and stay away from people who are not practicing these protocols. If you must take time off, be encouraged that when it is time to return, it’ll be like riding a bicycle. Be steadfast and you’ll be right back to crushing it.
If you happen to land on this post due to a current illness, I wish you a very healthy speedy recovery! You are always welcome to workout #InThePaint with me when you are feeling up to it. We utilize technology that allows you to workout in the comfort of your home while I can still see you and hold you accountable.
Live Healthy & Active. Be Prosperous.
