A Black History Moment Macon a Difference in Literature: Shana Burton

One of the most entertaining book club meetings that my old book club ever had was in 2011 when we read Suddenly Single.   We were excited to be hosting the author at our meeting but we had no idea that the book was going to be so good.  That was just the beginning of several entertaining novel journeys that would come after being exposed to this beautiful young lady.

Her name is Shana Burton.  A native of Macon, Georgia, she is the best-selling author  of the critically-acclaimed Flaws series (Flaws and All, Flaw Less, Flawfully Wedded Wives, and Flawbulous); a memoir, Note to Self: The Diary of a Divorcee; and Georgia Author of the Year (GAYA) Best Fiction nominated book, First Comes Love.  She was also nominated for a GAYA award for Flaws and All.  Her tenth book, Kiss and Tell, which hits the book stands on Thursday, March 19, 2020.

Shana Burton is a book club favorite and has earned a spot of several annual “Best Book of the Year” lists. She is a sought-after speaker, moderator, and expert panelist.

Shana Burton is a graduate of Georgia Southern University (B.S in English Education), Cambridge College (M. Ed in Curriculum and Instruction), and Thomas University (Ed.S in Teacher Leadership). In addition to being an author, Shana Burton has worked in the field of education for 21 years and currently serves as a high school curriculum coach. She is the founder of “The Writers’ Voice,” which assists aspiring writers in their pursuit of getting published.

When Ms. Burton is not writing, she can be found nursing her addiction to politics and reading or spending time with her sons. On rare occasions, she has also been spotted working out at the gym.

After I met Shana, we stayed in touch and she donated items to community events we were hosting.  I found her to have a heart of gold in addition to her many professional talents.  She eventually answered a call to action by the book club that I went on to start in 2011 and became a member.  I was so excited to have an author published numerous times in our local book club.  Our club has read a few of her books since that time and never been disappointed.  Shana has grown to be my Raving Lady Reader sister and here recently, she coined our relationship “Sisters-N-Lit” after I published my first book in 2019.

Shana has inspired me with her devotion to writing and the motivational message that young black women can be successful in the literary world.  I appreciate her contributions to literature as do many others that are looking up to her as a Macon GA native role model.  Continue to be extraordinary Author Shana Burton.  You are Black History!
