Save Your Do with the Save Your Do Gymwrap

One of my first post was about the ongoing issue of African American women dealing with hair maintenance and exercise.  The article proved to be most helpful with all of your comments and suggestions that you all use on a daily basis.

I have been wearing the Save Your Do Gymwrap for almost a year now.  I support the purchase of the product and stand behind it 100%.  You can purchase one here.  I wanted to do a post to elaborate on what is so special about this gymwrap as opposed to the scarf, mesh cap, or other savior you might be using currently.  Below is a before and after picture of my hair from a typical day at the gym.  I will walk you through my process with pictures so you can visually see the effect of using this product.

        BEFORE WORKOUT           AND                AFTER WORKOUT

Save Your Do™ GymWrap is a stylish headband developed with a patent-pending revolutionary “Edge Control Technology” that minimizes sweat absorption through a unique blend of materials that allows heat to escape while letting cool air in. The moisture ‘wicking’ process occurs at the molecular level within the fabric resulting in drier flat hair!”  That was Save Your Do in a nutshell, directly from the website.  You can read more about it and get answers to frequently asked questions on the site.

My Process in Maximizing the Effectiveness of the Save Your Do Gymwrap

STEP 1 - PINNING FRONT OF HAIR TO KEEP THE CURLS

STEP 2 - TIE THE SAVE YOUR DO GYMWRAP AND GO GET YOUR WORKOUT ON
STEP 2 – TIE UP THE GYMWRAP AND GO GET YOUR WORKOUT ON

STEP 3 – REMOVE WRAP AFTER POST 55 MINUTE BODYCOMBAT MIXED MARTIAL ART INSPIRED CARDIO KICKER WORKOUT
STEP 4 - PULL THE CURLS DOWN, RUN FINGERS THROUGH THE HAIR & GO
STEP 4 – PULL THE CURLS DOWN, RUN FINGERS THROUGH THE HAIR & YOU’RE GOOD TO GO

I always opt to wrap my hair before getting in the shower because I don’t like the tight curl look.  This is how I come up with my after look seen below.

ALL READY TO GO BACK TO WORK NOW:)
ALL READY TO GO BACK TO WORK NOW:)

As you see, it’s not a magical wrap.  However, it does stop the sweat around the edges and provides you some relief in knowing that your $50-$100 hair do is not totally shot to crap just days after getting your hair done.  If this is not a problem you suffer from (meaning you aren’t black nor do you have course hair to maintain), please share it with someone that you know it will help. We are all in this weight loss, healthy living, get fit journey together and need to support each other.

In the spirit of full disclosure, this post contains an affiliate link, which means that I may get a commission if you decide to purchase anything from Save Your Do. I only recommend products & systems that I use and love myself, so I know you’ll be in good hands.  Clearly, I LA LA LA LOVE the Save Your Do and I know you will too!

Yours in Healthy, Active, and Prosperous Lifestyles,

  1. Those photos are so great! Where was this when I had a perm?!?! The market has been needing this for a long long time, I actually have a girlfriend that simply refuses to mess up her do by coming to the gym with me! This will be perfect for her. Your hair is fab-u-lus!!

    1. I agree! This was a much needed product and I think there is room for more, we should brainstorm on a product:) Thanks for the compliment!

      1. Hi,
I was looking for some hair tips for working out and found your post. I love to work out but I sweat a lot! I purchased the Save Your Do Gymwrap months ago. I used it once and found it very disappointing. Apparently I am not doing something right. My hairline was still very wet. I wear a short cut. Any suggestions?? This is really a struggle for me. I would like to work out before work but it is just too much effort to style my hair.

        1. Hi DeeDee! I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you. I don’t wear a short cut so I can’t really speak from experience. I can only go off what the company recommended. I am not sure if you are interested in changing your hairstyle but that is what I had to do as instructor. I chose a sew in because I like the way it looks. Teaching in front of people with pin curls in my head just wasn’t going to get it 🙂 I would suggest if you are comfortable, trying out a different hair style. I mentioned several of them in this post Haircare 101. Please check it out and let me know what you think or if you have anymore question. Thank you for visiting.

  2. If I need to fix it, I use a spray bottle with water, tease it up (or toward the ground if I’m leaning over), and let dry. It usually needs little maintenance if any once my style is correct. Woot!

  3. I haven’t had an issue with my hair and working out since going natural. I wonder if this will save my do for my blow out/ flat iron style. It might be worth the try. Your hair is beautiful.

    1. WOW Hope, what a blessing! What do you do for your regular workouts? I have friends that are natural that use it. It would be worth it. Thanks for the hair compliment:)

  4. Your hair looks good girl! I wanted to try this wrap when I saw it advertised on Nicole Ari Parker’s twitter page. I haven’t worked out in months, and I forgot all about it. I’ll have to check it, out if I’m going to get back into the gym! I wear wigs, and pieces occasionally, so this would be ideal for those styles.

    1. I will take that Kita! I spend a lot of time, energy, and money trying to keep it together. Thank you. You keep it so real my friend!

  5. This would have been great for me when I was relaxed. I would hate spending my money to get my hair done and then later on the do would be gone because I would go to the gym! Not only am I natural now, but I stay in protective styling so I don’t have to worry about sweat and those things anymore. Great post and tutorial! Beautiful hair! 🙂

    1. Thanks Britton!!! I still don’t like messing up my hair even with all the savior tactics but we have to do what we have to do to stay in good health.

  6. The pics certainly prove it works!! You look great!
I *despise* hair washing days. I wrote about this in the past and really wondered how often people shampoo their hair. I workout 6 days a week, and in the past, that means washing my hair everyday (so bad for you!!)..but I just sweat soo much and really hated the feeling of not shampoo’ing.
I’ve really embraced dry shampoo now, so that holds it a couple of days between washes!
TorontoRunner recently posted…An Apology + Summer Vacations??My Profile

    1. Thanks girl! My people don’t shampoo nearly as often as yours. It’s just a different hair texture and I learned all about these differences in elementary school. My friends couldn’t believe I got shampooed weekly or every other week and I surely couldn’t believe they did it daily but that’s just how we were created. Meanwhile, now as an adult, we have to try to keep this course grade of hair looking manageable bt sweat sessions and judging by the comments, I’m doing half decent;) Cool beans about the dry shampoo, I had no idea that was an option.

  7. i absolutely love “save your do”. i got one last year from an event and have been hooked since. it was created by nicole ari parker. it’s such a godsend. i love how you pin curl your hair first. i have to do that. thanks for sharing.

    1. Hey girl! So good to hear from you! It is so addictive. I wear mine everyday and I agree that sister was on it with this new much nedded product. Let me know how you like the pin curl modification.

  8. Wow what a magical thing to have! I must order some asap — though I have not been very good at getting back to the gym for a few months….however I will soon start back.

Love your Blog and kudos to you on the fitness path – this is a goal of mine this year – no matter that it is not about losing weight for me, it is about health and fitness. Love the gym, Pilates, zumba and power walking.

    I have subsribed!

    All the best! Jeanine

    1. Thank you for the compliments and subscription Jeanine! Everyone is not trying to lose, thanks for that. I am in that boat with you. Once we reach our ideal weight, we must not let go of our diligent efforts to maintain good health and strive to be as fit as possible. You’ve got a diverse workout regimen going there. Good luck getting back to it.

    1. Me too Amanda. I was wondering how it would have been back in the day when we were practicing and playing for hours. I haven’t played ball using it, maybe I’ll get the chance this weekend for the reunion. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. You should try the pinning & loose ponytail for your long mane and check out the other article in the post too for more tips. Thank you so much for visiting & commenting.

  9. I love love love the wrap. I use the full triangle and my hair is short and relaxed. I wrap my hair, workout and then leave it on while I shower. I’m able to maintain a nice rap that way.

  10. Your hair looks great Joi!! I think I’m now sold on the Save Do!! I purchased the headband from Sally ‘s that you mentioned in a previous post but hadn’t sweated enough w/the cooler temps to see it’s magic.. I loved your suggestion of the pin curls too!!!

    1. I shouldn’t have even put that in there. I rarely ever use it, but I felt it was my duty to provide economical options for all PFL readers. The Save Your Do is very worth the investment. I just started pin curling with the gymwrap like the end of December and I was like WHOA, awesome innovation. I hope you will give it try soon, bootcamp is brutal on the hair girl. Thanks for stopping by boo!

  11. Your hair is so cute! I wish I had this when I was working out with a relaxer years ago (well attempting to). These days, loss work for me with the workout. I need to share this with those that I know who wear their hair natural and relaxed. It really is a do-saver.
KalleyC recently posted…One Word February UpdateMy Profile

    1. Lol, an attempt is good Kalley! I would appreciate you sharing the post;) It has been a blessing to my workout/hair maintenance regimen.

  12. I loooove this post! For so lobg I have allowed my hair to make me unhealthy and no more! I was wondering if these things worked and now Im thinking I will get me one!

Thanks for reading myblog! Wanted to share the love.

  13. Your hair looks great! Do you curl your hair with a curling iron or heated curlers? Id like to try them but in the meantime you’ve inspired me to order save your do.

    1. HI Crys! You can order directly from this post if you really want to purchase one. Just click the link above.

I get my hair curled with a flat chi iron I think is the name of it. I don’t recurl it once I leave the salon. Thanks for stopping by.

      Joi

  14. First of all– your hair looks gorgeous! I used to be really active in high school and college however since joining the work force my activity level dropped to near zero. I was blessed to find a man who also happens to be a personal trainer but I want to kill him when he makes me work out after a relaxer! I was beginning to think my only option was to wear braids for the rest of my life or go natural (which I know I cannot maintain).
I just ordered the bandana style because I sweat a lot and am praying it works for me (for his sake lol)!

    1. I hope it works too. Please come back and let me know how you like it. Mine has been excellent…not magic but a great resource! Thank you for visiting.

      Joi

  15. Love save your do gym wrap. I have been using for almost a year. I alternate between full triangle and wide band version version for workouts. I also use the wide band one to sleep in because of hot flashes while sleeping, it saved my hair. Had been suffering breakage in the back before that.

    1. I have the full triangle as well but hadn’t thought of sleeping in it. Way to multipurpose the product. Thanks for visiting.

      Joi

  16. Soooo glad to see this!! As ashamed as I am to admit this, I was actually contemplating giving up gym membership because I was afraid of “messing” up my hair in my kick boxing combat classes. I wear a sew in as well, but my leave out would always get so puffy and damp after I finished my work outs. I would get so frustrated and it would keep me away form the gym. I am so appreciative for this post! I know that I can work out and still maintain a pretty hairstyle! Off to order the wrap now!!! Thank you! Thank you!!
One question..With your sew in and working out how often to your wash?

    Thanks so much again!!
