Today, history is made as the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrate 100 years of Sisterhood and Service. The official celebration is being held in Washington D.C. where over 12,000 members of the sorority are gathered and will have a black tie dinner where President Obama will address all of my beautiful sorors. The sorority will have their 51st National convention this July. It is expected to be double the attendance and more as we paint Washington D.C. red for the second time this year. I will be at that one! I’ve been saving my pennies:)
Several bloggers have been posting New Year’s Resolutions to the tune of wanting to volunteer in the community more. One of the ways that I volunteer in my community is staying active in the Macon Alumnae Chapter of my sorority. Most people are always complaining that they are just so busy with life in general that there is no time for anything else. I can identify with those people. Joining an organization that structures community involvement for you will keep you closely connected to the needs of your community and afford you numerous opportunities to give back. Obviously all sororities do not function the way that the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC) does. Members of the NPHC continue on services in alumni chapters after college as a lifetime commitment. There are several other organizations that are committed to public service that you can join locally to get your foot in the door with community service if you aren’t a member of the NPHC and you don’t want to go volunteer on your own. Ok, that’s it for my PSA on getting involved in the community.
Celebrating Being a Delta: A Small Tribute
I have been a Delta almost 12 years *wiping forehead*, getting old:). I pledged at Fort Valley State University, Eta Chapter in the spring of 2001 with 27 other young ladies.
The first Delta I ever knew was my Mother!
She pledged a while ago at Albany State University!
She has a major influence naturally on my life and of course I followed in her footsteps, as did the young one.
I am blessed to serve in the same chapter with both of them building the community that reared me and that I have a special love for. We have had several Mother daughter moments as a result of working for Delta.
The sorority has a 5 Point Thrust that we tailor our service and sisterhood activities around. Just this week, I did a preview of Kickboxing at a local detention center for incarcerated females in coordination with our Physical & Mental Health initiative. There are so many opportunities to serve people and for building relationships within a Sisterhood.
We do plenty of activities to foster sisterhood from within the organization as well.
I have proudly served as President of my line since our beginning stages. What exactly does that mean. I have made sure that we have annual reunions to celebrate our line’s birthday and to foster ongoing growth within the sisterhood.
Have Homecoming Party Dinners & Festivities
We were lucky to pass the torch on to some younger, hard working sorors as we graduated and moved on to join Alumnae chapters.
I have been fortunate enough to share the sisterhood with some very dear friends as well.
I have been blessed by my membership & knowledge of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Inc. I have gained a mentor in the profession of pharmacy who walked me through the application process of pharmacy school. I received scholarships from the local chapter before I was ever a Delta. I ‘ve formed lasting relationships with incarcerated teenage girls over the last 7 years through volunteering within the sorority and the list goes on and on.
This blog is about Living Active & Healthy, & Being Prosperous. I just wanted to pause and send a major SHOUT OUT to all the Ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. celebrating 100 years today, friends of ours in the Greek community that offer support of our projects, family members that lend that soror to the community for a few hours a month, people who donate to our fundraisers to help us provide scholarships and mission minded projects, and anybody who participates in our events or benefits from them. Being a Delta has afforded me numerous opportunities in prosperity, healthy living, and being active!

One cold day, exactly 100 years ago, 22 women founded a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., a sorority that will forever play a large role in shaping communities near and far. I’m reminded on this day, how important the foundation these 22 women put in place really is. I’m happy to be a part of an organization that embodies everything I am and hope to be.
