On to regular schedule programming!
It’s Act-Fit Friday! I asked the question ; (Do You Workout on Vacation?) on Facebook from my little getaway and YIKES to the response!!! They were all over the place!
There were resounding N.O.s, Y.E.S.s, sometimes, usually, & it depends! With vacation season alive and popping, I thought I’d post some tips and tricks for successfully continuing your fitness goals on vacay.
Easy Tips & Tricks for Continuing Your Fitness Efforts While Vacationing
1. Plan your workouts for the week to include the day before you leave for vacation, the morning you leave for vacation, and the the day after you return. Depending on how long you vacation, that might be enough for the week.
2. If you follow step number 1 and you are gone for more than 2 or 3 days, then schedule 1 workout right in the middle of the trip.
3. Take the opportunity to try out some of the at home routines from your favorite bloggers. SN: Carli of Real Into has an AMAZING Pinterest Pile up of some serious workouts that you can have fun with!
4. Of course when you are booking hotels, check the amenities for the fitness center, free wifi so you can pull up those workouts I just mentioned, and for pools (they make for a good fun workout).
5. Take your mini DVD player and bring along a workout DVD that you can do in an open space (you might get someone to join you with this one).
I am very antiquated…, you can download them or however you all are viewing workout material these days 😉 ! I still use my mini DVD player, but there is tons of great free stuff on Youtube.
6. While people are taking that mid afternoon nap, be productive & get your workout in!
7. Wake up early before the rest of the gang to get your workout out of the way. Alternatively, if it doesn’t keep you up at night, do a late workout.
8. Consider doing shorter workouts than what you would do on a regular basis. Cut it to 30 minutes.
9. Walk everywhere; Shopping extravaganzas, amusement parks, whatever…keep a good pace (that is more than you would normally do, it counts).
10. Plan activities that include moving your body (Excursions, hikes, group workouts, etc.).
If you don’t workout on vacation, don’t beat yourself up about it. Try not to overindulge in the dining out & enjoy your time with family and friends. You will more than likely feel much better if you keep your workouts going on some level. You will have more energy to maximize your time in the city.
Does Rx Fitness Lady Workout on Vacation?
The lovely Gillian over at Fitnessbuster was like the last commenter on Facebook and of course, her question was; Are you working out?
The answer was NO!
Here’s the thing….I was only gone for 2 days! I utilized them as rest days. I did however get lots of exercise walking in and out of the stores in those outside malls 😉 (I despise those by the way)!
My above tips come from lots of experience. Usually I go to conventions that last all week (Mon – Fri.). When I attend those conventions, I put my best Hair savior methods to use (you know, so I will still look fly at the convention 🙂 ) and utilize all the different tips I listed.
It is ok to “enjoy” your vacation without exercising if you are going for a short period. But…As you read in my very popular post “A Girls Weekend“, you can make working out a very fun fellowship opportunity!

I’m going on two mini vacations this summer – Maine and Cape Cod. And I gotta tell you – I WILL work out but completely unplanned. Our little private beach in Cape Cod has the steepest dunes in the world. Just try walking up and down them with two kids and a ton of equipment several times a day! Man last year hurt.
As for Maine, we plan to do some hiking.

I can imagine that load and consequential exercise. The trips sound delightful! Enjoy Tamara!
I make sure to stay in a hotel with a fitness cemter so I can at least hit the weights sweat less and save my hair!!Lol
Toya recently posted…So where have you been???!!!
Yes MA”AM! Gotta stay fly on vacation!
Ok, you could not have written this at a more opportune time for me! I will be going on a family vacation starting next Wednesday through Sunday. I was teetering back and forth between working out or not. You’ve TOTALLY given me the motivation to make it happen! I will research that area to see if there may be a running trail near by. I WILL see a drop on the scale when I get back from vacay! Thanks for the kick in the caboose that I needed.
Of course my dear! I’m glad it was before your trip! I hope you all enjoy the trip next week…I’ll finally be back at work by then 🙂 !
I don’t workout while on vacay. My mission is to find the tastiest foods possible to consume (regardless of calories) while doing vacation stuff. True story. Woe is me? O_O

I heard that! Whatever floats your boat my dear!
Yikes is right at the FB comments (including seeing mine at the top with a not so good answer 🙂 ) Congrats on being a Sweat Pink Ambassador and a SITS community lead. We’ll be doing two mini (extended weekend) trips to Disney and to the beach. I enjoy running on the beach while on vacation. No sure how I’m gonna handle Disney though. Great tips Joi!
I got a little nervous when you mentioned this was the last post for the month until I realized it was the end of the month. whew! lol
Hope recently posted…Working while not well..
Lol, I’m still here for now Hope! Thanks girl and Disney sounds amazing for the kiddos! Running on the beach always seems so dangerous to me. I thought that was only done in movies 🙂
Congratulations on being the Community Lead for SITS! Great opportunity Joi! We walk so that’s the way we keep up with fitness when we go out of town.
Whitney recently posted…What’s Brewing at The Cafe
Thanks Whitney! I love SITS and am glad to be more involved there!
I am so glad to be reading this. I have quite recently begun working out (I know, it’s hard for me to believe, too) and I was started to get antsy about what would happen the week we go to the beach in July. These are wonderful tips and I’m going to use them! (and I think I’m bringing my hand weights because we’re going by car and I can pack anything I want to…so why not!! I can at least do some things with them even if I don’t have my weight bench! –Lisa

I find it quite ironic that I’m reading this post while I eat a big plate of leftover spaghetti with garlic bread. Ha!
Congratulations on the Community Lead accolade with SITS. I enjoy seeing you excel at all the many things you do. It is very inspiring. Keep up the good work, girl!
I just left Destin and am going back in November for a wedding. I need to be “bathing suit ready” for that trip. So I will probably be working out on that vacation.

I’ve always worked out on vacations! Running has let me see some amazing things that I never would have discovered otherwise, Running in the African bush and biking across the Golden Gate Bridge were very special! Lots of stories 🙂

Thanks for the reminder about the amenities. I’m getting ready to take another trip and I never take my workout clothes. Then I look at the little gym and say I should have brought my workout clothes. I had to the nerve to go in the last fitness center on our vacation last week and take a picture of it. LOL! I was going to to blog about what I didn’t use but I changed my mind. 😉 I’ll go check out what’s happening with the Pinterest Party. Happy belated birthday.

Thanks for the well wishes Kenya!
Thank you for this! I always bring my workout outfit on longer vacations… usually when I am out of the country for 2 weeks, I get to work out maybe 4 or 5 days out of the trip. It’s always good to move!
Have a great weekend 🙂

Yep – I always work out on vacation!!
The boys and I just got home from a short TX trip and later this summer we are all going to Florida for a couple of weeks – and I can’t wait for some great sweaty beach workouts!!!

First off….we’re sisters! Of the pink variety! #sweatpink
Secondly, thank you for the Pinterest mention. You know I love my boards (I’ve been contemplating adding a crossfit section).
All of your tips are great but I’m some sort of weird vacationer. I work out more on vacation. Actually to me a vacation involves working out all day. Vacation means no stress, which means no possible food mishaps, which means no possible lazy TV days. I literally love workout vacations!
Carli recently posted…Fourteen Miles a Week to Slim
Hey, whatever works my Carli! Enjoy that vacay time the best way you can! NP about your boards, they are on point!
Congrats! I have to get more involved in the SITS community again. I agree with the shorter workouts…to keep you on track and give time to having fun.

Yes ma’am, get it in but don’t obsess, after all; it is vacation!
Thanks dear!
We are going to the beach somewhere at the end of July I don’t like to spend money so I don’t like vacations but I think we need one. I will be doing some walking from my car to the beach….I promise to park away and watch an extra few feet just for you.
😉 Thanks Kita! Have fun at the beach!
Congrats on sweatpink!! I hate working out on vaca but if the hotel has a gym, I’d probably hit it up
Thx Nellie!
I’m going to Cyprus for a week this summer. I’ve been doing a running program at the gym (training for a 5K) in August but I won’t have access to a gym while I’m there and it will be too hot to run outside. These tips will help me though – I’ll run the day I go and the day I get back and so I’ll only miss two workouts – and I’m going to keep my level of fitness up by walking and swimming.

We have a little mini trip planned for the beach. Nothing too extravagant! I answered your question on FB, but yes, I try to workout on most occasions while vacation.

Yeah, the mini ones sometimes we can getaway with it, but the long ones, me too!
No vacation for us this summer:( Going on a cruise in December and it is actually a dance fitness cruise so I will be exercing the entire time! (My Dance Fit Divas are taking a group cruise!)

Congrats on Sweat Pink and becoming a community lead at the SITS Girls! You rock!!
Most of the time I work out on vacation but it really depends where we are going and how long we are gone. If we’re going someplace for just a couple days or it’s someplace where we are going to be doing a ton of walking, I might not bring my running stuff. But if we’re going to the beach, I definitely bring it. 🙂

I’m not really vacationing. But I am going to Tampa for a couple of days. I’m going to see Beyonce twice!!!! That’s better than any vacation 🙂
Watching Beyonce move it feels like a workout !!!
I read this right on time. Centennial is less than 2 weeks away and I’ll be gone 6 days. I said I wasn’t going to workout while in DC because I’m sure I’ll be doing a lot of walking but enjoying the different restaurants at the same time. My plan is to workout 4 days in a row before I leave and take a set of workout gear for a mini workout. I will also eat small light meals throughout the day so I won’t over eat at dinner.
I’m only staying 4 days. We might cross paths 🙂
I never really plan on working out when on vacation, but it always seems to happen. We usually end up doing a lot of walking and some sort of outdoor activity. I’ve been trying to keep up with a healthier lifestyle. My brother is fitness trainer as well and finally got me on board.
Brandi recently posted…Blueberry-Lemon Snow Cone Syrup
You told me about your brother. I’m glad he can be an inspiration for you Brandi! That’s great!
It really depends on where I am. At FitBloggin? I exercised all day….On vaca with my husband? Not so much. I always throw in extra workouts before I leave and when I come back to fix any damage.
Kimberly {Manifest Yourself} recently posted…What is crossfit?
That’s a good routine Kim! I saw the pictures on IG from Fitbloggin, can’t wait to hear all about it!
the last time i had an “official” vacation was a few years ago in Vegas. and girl, no – even if i were a regular worker-outer, exercise during my off time would never be an option! LOL! i’d follow Kimberly’s lead…undo the damage done upon my return to real life. 🙂

This has become one of my fav posts. You truly helped me get through my vacation. Usually I end up splurging the ENTIRE time and not being too active. I’ve been known to gain a dress size if the vacation is long enough. This is the first time that I lost weight while away. Thank you for the motivation. And thank you for linking up!
That is so awesome Veronica. Congrats on an enjoyable vacay all the way around!
Holiday workouts. Hmmm. Those words are mutually exclusive, Joi! Just kidding. But honestly, at Christmas, I am so not even thinking about working out. I make up for it in January when I get back to the cold weather. 🙂
