SQUAT Test: Gym Undies for the Ladies

WHAT IN THE WORLD  are my Tuesday morning Combat warriors doing, you wonder?

Before I answer, Dr. J, if you’re here with me today, you may want to come back Thursday 🙂 ! You’ve been warned!

SQUAT Test Gym Undies for the Ladies - Rx Fitness Lady

A lady has to know if her underwear/panties/briefs will show through her workout pants, right?

This is what you call the “Squat Test”!

They love me a lot to pose for this picture 🙂 !  I promised them they would remain faceless 😉 !

SQUAT TEST - Faceless BODYCOMBAT Warriors

Now, if you were to ask my advice for comfortable seamless underwear at the gym, I’d advise COMMANDO (none at all)!

COMMANDOI absolutely despise any type of underwear while I’m working out.  If that makes you disgusted, think about wearing tights under your shorts, skort, or whatever you wear.  Tights are just as comfy as commando.

Most quality workout tights and shorts have built in liners, so what really is the big deal? I guess it’s just a preference because the conversation in the locker room that sparked this prompt went something like this….

What kind of underwear do you have on under there, to make sure it doesn’t show through?

Me: I go commando??? (as in, who doesn’t)

*Side eye* That seems so awkward to me!  I’m wearing a thong but I won’t something more comfortable.

We went on chattering about what underwear was available and then the squat test came up.

They informed me, that even going commando, I didn’t have to worry about my skin showing through my black tights.    Their white skin however, would show profusely if squatting with no underwear.

You got me there my friends! Therefore, I present to you, whether you are team Rx Fitness Lady (COMMANDO) or the other side (whatever underwear makes you comfy); purchase quality (thick tights) and BE SURE TO TAKE THE SQUAT TEST IN THE MIRROR BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME!

And here I thought the squat test was to check to see if you could make room in your too small jeans so you wouldn’t be cutting off your circulation all day trying to be cute!

HOLLA!

  • Let me hear it, what team are you on?
  • Have you performed the squat test?
  • Do you think it’s cute/inappropriate/intimidating/distracting to have body parts hanging out at the gym (tummy, breasts, you know how the little flamboyant gym bunnies dress)?
  • If you wear them, do you have any recommendations for a comfortable type of underwear?

  1. I love this post… im actually team thong lol!!!! What I would like to known is where you get your workout gear??? I just wear old sweats and a big tshirt righy now lol.

  2. Hahahaha! I do the squat test whenever I buy new gym tights OR if I feel like they could be wearing thin. + I am team thong…. can’t do commando yet.

I remember when I used to be a cheerleader in HS, there was a debate about wearing underwear under the spanks (they look like over-sized,sparkly granny panties). I still wore underwear then too…even though it felt like I had on 2 pairs.

  3. Okay, Joi, I’m with you on this one. Commando for sure. I’m too busy working out to be worried about panties going where they don’t belong. And you can tell your girls that I’ve never once done a squat test. If the gym pants are comfortable they get worn. I guess I have no shame.

  4. ha! This is great. I was shopping yesterday and there were yoga pants with a built in skirt. I said to the salesgirl, “Why do these pants have a skirt?”
And she said, “So people who don’t want to show their butts…won’t show their butts!”
She had me there, I admit.

  5. I’m with you – tights have to be a certain thickness – that said, I still wear underwear – I never even thought about not. I wear thongs under real clothes but never to work out.
Maybe I should give the commando thing a shot……decisions!!

  6. I can’t believe I’m going to comment on this but I prefer going with something on 😉 I do hate panty lines, though – I like boy-short style undies and they seem to prevent that. I have done commando a few times but it doesn’t work quite as well for running. Too much jiggle to show the cars on the road.

LOVED this post – hilarious! esp. the picture!

    1. Maybe you should holla at Allie! She’s commando and a runner! I can’t help with that but as long as you are comfortable and appropriate that’s what’s important. Thanks for commenting Ashley!

  7. LOL at the squat test pic. Love the sweater on the head…although you could have blurred their faces with picmonkey .lol (I can hear you now…aint nobody got time for that)
Anyway, I’ve gone commando on a few runs, but I prefer comfy undies. At the gym though, I always wear undies although sometimes my pants try to slide down…then I’m constantly pulling them up to not show the top of my undies.

Love the MLK pics. Remember them well.

    1. LOL! You hit the nail on the head, plus it was pretty fun for me and them taking the picture! We were giggling for the longest!

    1. Thank you for saying that! The nips really are like huge headlights and I’m like….that doesn’t make you uncomfortable!

  8. LOL! Joi I can depend on you to bring a smile to my face. I had not thought of going commando. I don’t do a squat test, but I do look in the mirror and have been known to change pants if stuff is not lining up to my liking. Ah, life!

  9. This post was hilarious…only you Joi! Lol! 😀 Heck yeah I have a problem with people’s unmentionables showing…who wants to see that! Besides, it’s not just the gym bunnies…everyone does it! Lol! I guess I’m not working out hard enough…cause’ I don’t ever have a problem with my underwear! 😉

  10. I find that the boyshorts work really well, but the other day in zumba class at my gym, one of the girls undies were SO obvious that I mentioned it to her after class because thank goodness it was all girls in class with us but she was about to take a strength training class with all GUYS!! Sometimes I totally go commando if I see something out of place. LOL at your faceless students, what you put them through for a post!! 🙂

  11. LOL. I loved this post. I agree with you on this issue and since I work out at home it’s never a problem. But I will say that when I took Pilates classes I did wear boyshorts, I think that they are Hanes and they are black but very sheer and they stay put. I only have two pairs and haven’t been able to find more. I take very good care of them, just in case I take another class. 🙂

  12. I absolutely loved today’s post. My friends always yell at me for wearing underwear underneath my dri-fit nike pro shorts. You are absolutely right on the fact that liners are in place. I have a fear that while doing cardio, one of my a** cheeks may come out. This thang pokes out, lol. I’m gonna try it though. OMG Joi, I LOVE THIS POST!!!! Going COMMANDO in the gym is more common than I thought.

    1. Hold up wait…are you saying you go to the restroom to dig cheese??? LOL! I would have to go commando if I had an issue digging in public, lol!

      So gross, I know!

  13. If I had the right workout gear because for a class (which I would definitely invest in some if I were going to a fitness class), I would definitely go commando. I was a dancer so this isn’t really foreign to me. Our dancewear was the same way in that it had liners and things in it so you don’t have to cover panty lines or be wearing an awkward thong or g string lol.

  14. Leave it to you to make this topic a PSA! LOL I have not done the squat test. I would probably go commando, but I would typically wear a shirt that covered my butt if I had on tights outside the house. The limited time I do exercise is at home so it’s not an issue for me. That’s eye opening about white women saying their skin would show through. I would have never thought about that. Good post, Joi!

  16. You aren’t afraid to go there, are you? LMBO! True to form, you keep it real here. Glad we can count on you to answer questions some may be too shy to ask. My knees are awful, so I don’t do squats anymore. 🙁 I enjoyed reading the comments, though. Fun pictures, too! LOL! XOXO

  17. Hi Joi! Stopping by your blog after your comment on my interview at RealInto! You are so bad ass! Excuse my french, but reading through your blog and your videos made me want to jump up and do some serious combat moves! You are super fit and informative with a side of funny, I LOVE THIS POST. I always do the squat test, then the jump test, to make sure my spandex aren’t going to ride up while I’m working out.

As for your questions, it’s not cute to have your tummy and breasts hanging out, nor is it cute to have butt cheeks exposed. I get it, I wear spandex too but make sure they cover everything, cause let’s be serious no one liked a wedgie while working out!

    1. Hi Amber! Thanks for coming over and dropping the comment love! What sweet sentiments! I appreciate it and loved your story!
