Mythbuster – I Am NOT Mean

Every since I was a little girl, people thought I was mean and stuck up! I always get the “SMILE”, “It’s not that bad”, “Why are you looking so mean”, etc.

Mythbuster - I Am NOT Mean

This post is for  Kim’s September Sapphire Even Day Blog Challenge! We are almost finished.  Great prompts from a FABULOUS host!

Thursday, September 26, 2013: Remediation.  List 3-5 myths that people have/had about you and then list the facts that prove the myths to be false.

#1 MTYH ABOUT JOI – SHE IS MEAN!

I mean seriously, I get it! I told you I have a mean streak!  I didn’t really understand why people were always making comments about me looking mean though until I saw this clip from A Girl’s Weekend!

MAN,  I was looking mean! Sad too, because that was one of the best weekends ever! I was very happy there!

The fact is, if you would just give me a chance and speak or talk to me you’d find out that I am not so mean after all.  Seriously, “SHE DOESN’T SPEAK TO ME”! What is that about??? Open your mouth and speak to ME, geesh!!!  I don’t bite 🙂 !

People just gave me stuck up probably because I’m one of those  “you don’t mess with me, then I don’t mess with you” type of people!

I can’t help my disposition.  I promise though, I’m not thinking about whoever thinks I’m mean mugging them.  I just am who I am!

Every since watching that video, I have tried to take my own advice and SMILE a little more often 🙂 !

  1. Not gonna lie, way back when we were in school I thought you were mean but that whole idea went away. I see you are very kind, full of energy ( based on those workouts),and really cool. People tend to think I’m sleepy all the time it really shy because I’m quiet when I’m really the total opposite. I like doing almost anything and enjoy new people and places. Guess you just can’t judge people on how they look! Lol.

  2. I totally get it Joi. I naturally have a serious disposition. It wasn’t until high school band when the band instructor dubbed me “stone face”. I was shocked! He said people aren’t gonna know how wonderful you are because your stone face says…don’t talk to me. Since then I made a conscious effort to smile more. All though 8 yrs of college my most common compliment was you have such a nice smile (or you have nice teeth).
I still have a serious disposition usually because I’m always thinking. I don’t think you looked mean in the vid. You looked normal…not super excited, nor mean or sad.
I have never met you irl, but I don’t think you’re mean AT ALL.
My best workout this week, I just finished a 12 mile run. So glad it’s over. Burned 1400 cal 🙂

I’m not surprised you couldn’t resist. Lol. Great prompt.

  3. I just can’t picture people thinking of you as mean. But, yeah, you weren’t all smiles in the video. 😉 I’m not sure what my natural disposition is. I try to be positive and upbeat at work because I feel like it’s my job to be. But I’m pretty quiet and reserved most of the time.

  4. I used to get the “she’s stuck up” thing too when I was growing up. Sometimes I didn’t mind, honestly. You don’t want to be getting too chummy with some folks… But I digress. I have learned to get my smile on to the point that it is more my default setting than the exception. But it’s definitely a myth that I’m stuck up.

  5. My best workout this week is planking. I love it.
No, I don’t think you look mean in this video – maybe just not ready. Like some people look before their coffee. Maybe you just needed something. Like more time!
My natural disposition is smiling and friendly. Sometimes it’s probably overkill, but it’s not phony. If you see me in the morning at preschool dropoff, though? I probably look “mean.” Or as I like to call it, “not ready.”
I would never think you are mean, but I “met” you through your writing so that’s almost an advantage because the good heart shines through.

    1. Sweet comment Tamara! Glad you warned me about the smiley disposition. I tend to always think those people are being fake. You don’t strike me through writing as the smiley type. Definitely the happy individual but I just didn’t envision smiley! Would love to meet IRL!

  6. I don’t think you look mean in the video, just focused on getting out the door. My natural disposition is cheerful, I think. I’m definitely a people person. And my best workout this week was an interval class at the gym – two days later I was still groaning when I walked up and down steps. My glutes were punished!

  7. My mom is the complete opposite. When she is just sitting and thinking, her face looks smiley in kind of a weird way. She’s not actually smiling –her real smile is different– it just looks that way. That may sound good, but it’s actually bizarre. Sometimes you smile at her (because you think she’s smiling at you) and then you realize she was just thinking about the grocery list–then it’s awkward. 😀 –Lisa

  8. Lord, if this isn’t me all day! If I had a dollar for every time I heard “Smile” or “Why are you looking so mean”…
Just because I’m not walking around with a permanent smile plastered across my face does not mean that I’m upset. I could be in deep thought for all you know – which is usually the case.
And I’m glad you brought up the speaking thing. What is it with that? Folks will actually get an attitude because you didn’t speak to them! Yet these same fools never even attempted to open their mouth to speak to you first.
Anywho, I don’t think you looked mean in the video. It just looked like you were a little distracted. Your hair was cute though. 🙂

    1. I told you girl! We were on the same page with this one all the way! We’d be extremely wealthy if we had those dollars 😉

  9. LOL yep. You look like you just got off the phone with somebody that made you mad and you’re just being polite to the camera. I am THE same way. Don’t let sun be in my eyes. I make a effort to smile where I know it’s really necessary. Like Christopher is playing football. Truth is – no I’m not feeling football or the football parents and that would be my look ANYWAY. But I make an effort to smile and socialize so they don’t think I’m stank. I don’t want anybody to take my “assumed” lack of friendliness out on my son. So I grin and bear it 😉 Same ole same ole workout for me – nothing special.

  10. OMG that is soooooo funny!!! Everyone else is so cheery and smiling and you just look like a diva!! Ha ha ha OMG I am laughing!!
My best workout this week was my 11 miler today. It was the perfect Fall day, I wasn’t rushed, my playlist was just right and I had a playdate with my best friend and the kids afterward. Perfection!

  11. In the video, you were thinking “Get that damn camera outta my face.” Ha! LOL. I don’t think you’re mean though. I’m usually very quiet when I first meet people. I sit back and let others talk. But if I know you, it’s hard to shut me up. Don’t forget to link up any posts that you haven’t already! Thanks, Joi.

    1. That is so me too! I can run this trap a mile or minute or sit with the tight lip and look around at everyone like their crazy. Either one works for me depending on if I’m feeling the crowd!

  12. I think I’m naturally pretty smiley, but I can actually be very mean. HA! I can just be “non nonsense” at times, which I guess can be interpreted as the occasional mean! But I also hear that I’m too smiley and cheery! Seriously, can’t make everyone happy.

    1. I am learning that the homie doesn’t play! You have made that clear in more than a few posts and comments lately. I love it 🙂

  13. It is so aggravating to here someone say, “Smile girl.” Shut up! I here you on the whole folks think you’re mean and stuck up. Ah well. If they (particularly guys) aren’t courageous enough to approach you then maybe that’s for the better. No one likes a scary cat. Ha!

    1. You know Andrea, it has always been more so from females. Guys that don’t need to usually have a very grandeur sense of confidence, lol!

  14. Every picture/video you have ever posted over here you are smiling – that is exactly the way I picture you. I think that you are just like on your blog – pleasant, smiling and amazing!!!

Lately my natural disposition seems to be cranky!!! That isn’t really my “natural” but it seems to be more normal – gotta work on that!!

  15. Knowing you from your blog and the blog friendship that came of it, I know that you are sweet and very nice. But, yes, a smile goes a loooong way to help create the nice vibe. 🙂

  16. The crazy thing is….I smile Allllll the time and I am mean most of the time. Whatever I’m thinking it shows on my face….

  17. I’ve met you IRL and never for a minute thought you were mean! And I don’t know how someone could conclude that from an expression on your face in a 38 second video. I think anyone who knows you well would know differently.
    Ilene recently posted…Modern FamilyMy Profile

    1. Thanks Illene for the feedback! I appreciate it being that I met you in an environment that I could have been easily viewed as one of the above mentioned!

    1. Thanks Michelle! Funny, I forgot that I had the pleasure of meeting so many of you! I’m glad you all are coming to my defense 🙂

  18. Lol @ bitchy resting face from Britt. Sorry this is so late I’m just getting back into town so I am catching up on my comments. I don’t think you are mean at all I have totally met you irl and you are the sweetest just like I thought you would be!

I purposely look mean all the time, its a Brooklyn thing. No one is super friendly–we are courteous–but not friendly.

    1. That was funny from Brittnay! I saw you out on your rendezvous! Yay for that! I would fit in well in Brooklyn 🙂

  19. Hahaha Joi, too funny! Everyone tells me the same thing. They say I have a permanent scowl on my face, and I PROMISE, my mind is so far away from being mean, lol! My family accuses me of mean-muggin’ them all the time. I just tell them I’m deep in thought! That’s exactly what you look to be doing my friend…deep in thought! 🙂 But now, if you cross me the wrong way…I’ll cut you!! JK Joi…JK, lol!! So no, I don’t think you look mean at all girl…just serious! 🙂

    1. Hum, I bet that worked wonders for your husband’s ministry in the beginning 🙂 Your writing seems the complete opposite. I can’t even imagine you with a scowl!

  20. I’m struggling with that with a few people in my new office…they can come across as rough, or mean, but I think it’s just their disposition and I need to lighten up. Point is, sometimes it’s the other person’s problem too. At least here we get to know you through your thoughts first and you can just always post pictures where you’re smiling!

  21. OMG! I hear this ALL. THE. TIME. I hate when people say stuff like, “Why don’t you smile” or “It can’t be THAT bad”…I look at them like… -_-. Man…get out of my face! My face is normal!

  22. When my husband first met me he thought I was stuck-up. I am actually very shy and an introvert. If I push myself and smile I can seem more outgoing, but sometimes I am just not up for all that.

  23. That is too funny! I guess getting to know you via blogging, I always thought you were sweet and friendly. People’s first assumption of me in my 20’s was that I was a wild party girl. I never understood why because I was actually a good church goin, rule following person. One of my close guy friends said it was because I was extremely outgoing and friendly. I’m still trying to figure out how that translated to wild partier!ha

    1. Hey Veronica! So good to hear from you my friend! I have no clue why a friendly quality was perceived that way. I’ve always taken you for the good rule following church going lady that you are.
