January Addictions

Have you ever thought your were addicted to something?

So many miscellaneous things crossed my radar in January that deal with addiction that I decided to end the month with a My Health Monday on a Thursday šŸ˜‰ !

Addiction

No, I’m not addicted to gambling, but I was addicted to the show “Sex in the City” so I had to get a picture at theĀ casino on the machine šŸ™‚Ā

The Perfect Marriage

You remember the book club retreat I told you about? Well our first book for the year was ā€œThe Perfect Marriageā€ by Kimberly Lawson Roby. Ā I was inspired to get to reading ASAP after the retreat!

the Perfect Marriage

The book is an excellent read.Ā  I read it in 2 nights.Ā  It takes you through the journey of a couple in which one or both struggled with addictions to pain pills, cocaine, and gambling.

The main characters were college educated, 6 figure earners, with different backgrounds but similar lifestyles that many of you can probably relate to.Ā Ā  With stress being such a popular subject, Iā€™d like to open up this book club meeting to anyone who would like to attend and participate in a healthy discussion.

Our meeting is not until February 23rd, so you are more than welcome to tune in if you are local. Email me for the deets!

Ā

GAMBLING

Ā

In the book, an exorbitant amount of money was blown while gambling.Ā  I went to Biloxi this weekend for the Misterā€™s early birthday celebration and we saw firsthand some real life mismanagement of the intended entertainment that is the casino.

Hard Rock Casino

As humorous as it was to us, it was really sad that the lady huffed and puffed past us whining to us about ā€œI get tired of working all week and coming in here spending all my pay check for these machines not be putting out nothingā€.

I am not opposed to gambling if you can keep it in perspective.

Being Mary Jane

Ā

First of all, Iā€™M ADDICTED to this show.Ā  Secondly, Iā€™m ashamed at the crassness of the show being that itā€™s basic cable. The storylines are definitely relevant, however we can do without the EXTREMELY explicit sex scenes.Ā  I mean really, did anyone see the opening scene last week??? RIDICULOUS!!!

So on another note, the Addiction thing hit me again with the show.Ā  The episode addressed addiction to bad relationships. Hello out there!!!Ā  Did you even realize that was possible? OMG, that show is really good for a number of reasons.

On a more alarming note, one character in an effort to deal with stress and the feelings of failure slipped out of a 2-year recovery and snorted a line of cocaine.

Addiction was just slapping me in the face all month.Ā  I thought Iā€™d be robbing you if I didnā€™t address it here on PFL as this blog is as much about mental as it is physical health.

On that note, Iā€™m sharing an exert from the conclusion of my latest book club read.

The Perfect Marriage - Kimberly Lawson Roby

I hope your first month of 2014 has been healthy, fit, and prosperous.

Yours in Healthy, Active, & Prosperous Lifestyles,

  1. First of all. You and the mister…Ahhhhh *in my high pitch opera voice* Love it! Cute uggs (I was gonna say puggs…but I think that’s a dog so i had to google it…smh)

Addiction is such an important topic because it can relate to so many things. It’s a strong (sometimes harmful) need to regularly have something. I was addicted to the show 24 and I avoided watching Scandal because I didn’t want to go through”withdrawals” like I did when 24 was cancelled.

I watched the very first trailer of Being Mary Jane before the show aired regularly. It was pretty intense.

That book sounds really interesting. Thanks for sharing. Great topic today šŸ™‚

  2. SO much good stuff in this post…where do I start? OK.

You are the mister are just as CUTE as ever. YAS. HONEY. WERK. *three air snaps*

SATC is my favorite, I STILL watch all the oldies on E!

Being Mary Jane, yes, I agree. I was taken aback by that intro scene, LORD I hope these little ones ain’t watching. The addiction scene at the end broke my heart. He is just too fine to be doing all of that! But its real life…

You know how I feel about gambling. I probably won’t gamble more that $20 of my own money and even that hurts. haha

I read the Kimberla Lawson book last year. ALL of her books are phenomenal, and like you I finished in 2 days. VERY good. I wish I was local to jump in on your convo! It would be a good one I’m sure!!

  3. First, you and the man are too cute! Yesss!
I don’t gamble. I lived in Vegas for a year and the only time I went to the casino was to eat, see a movie or shop. Might have something to do with the fact that my Dad has an addiction to it.
I used to love love love Sex and the City.
I am addicted to Scandal and Downton Abbey now.
I still have not seen not one episode of being Mary Jane. I know I should watch, but really do I need to watch one more show where a black woman just can’t seem to get her relationship right? (Scandal takes care of that)
I’m going to order that book. I used to read all of her books, but they all started to be the same. I haven’t tried one in years, so I’ll give it a try again!

  4. So that’s the Mister?!?! You two look so cute! I love it. šŸ™‚ Was this his blog debut?

And “Being Mary Jane” is an addiction. I absolutely love it. Yes some scenes are a bit much… but I like that it is a bit more raw than the average shows out today.

And addiction is crazy. I believe that you can be addicted to a lot of things (outside of drugs, alcohol, and food). It’s a dangerous game to play, and many people don’t take it serious until it’s too late.

  5. I don’t really gamble very much because I’m too risk adverse and let’s face it, the house always wins. I have done it a couple of times with my husband as a fun thing but we didn’t spend too much money. I think addition can come in so many different forms like food, sleep, exercise (I may be guilty of that one . . . ). I think many people have the power to kick their addiction on their own. However, chemical substances can alter a person’s ability to deal with additions and I believe help is the best answer. Of course, some of us may not realize we have an addition until we do seek out someone. Great post!

  6. Loving the picture of you and the Mister. I don’t gamble ain’t got no money to waste….wait does playing scratch offs constitute as gambling…..ok I lied I do gamble then. OMG I need an intervention I just wanna be rich *cries* I can’t stand Mary Jane I am probably the only one that does not watch it

  7. This books sounds like an amazing read! You and mister are too cute girl! I’m way too cheap to gamble away my money like the gamblers out there. I recently blogged about my guilty pleasures and now I’m wondering if they’re actually addictions instead, lol!

  8. You and the Mister look so cute together!!!
I’m a cheapie at the casino – $40 a day. One trip to Vegas (Chris had a conference and I went to play) I left with $500!!! (I only play Craps!!)
That book sounds very interesting – I might have to check it out.

  9. I’m so giddy over that photo of you and the mister that I don’t know if I can be serious enough to talk about addiction – which is serious and heartbreaking and everywhere. Although I too was addicted to SATC – and maybe that’s not a bad one to have?

  10. There was a period of time when my grandfather would regularly lose his paycheck at the racetrack. With 6 children and a wife at home I have no idea what he was thinking. When he died there was a lot of lingering resentment for the position he’d put the family in.

On a lighter note…I loved the photo of you and your Mister šŸ™‚

  11. I like to gamble about once a year. I will not blow more than $200.00. I like the thrill of trying to hit it big. Las Vegas is my favorite vacation spot. I would love to join your book club discussion in February. Oh yes, you and mister make a cute couple.

  12. I love love love love Being Mary Jane!!!!! The guy who she is addicted it does it for me! Being a therapist I am surrounded by addiction and it comes in all forms, shopping; drugs, sex, food you name it. Unfortunately when it comes to drugs people have the stereotypical “pookie from new jack city” image in their mind when really most addicts dont look that way so they fail to see their behavior as an issue…. oh and cute pic of you and the Mr. šŸ™‚

  13. Love the pic with the Mister, Joi! šŸ™‚

You know I’m not a big TV person, so I haven’t seen ā€œBeing Mary Janeā€. Haves and the Have Nots is more than enough for me! LOL! I think I was addicted in the first season, but I’m more mellow about it this time around.

I think I’m addicted to hair and skin products (closet product junkie). Not makeup, but good lotions, oils, soaps, etc.

I don’t gamble, but like you, I believe that if people can do it without being addicted, fine. But therein lies the rub: you never know when you’ll become addicted. I had an uncle who got into beaucoup trouble due to excessive gambling.

For me, it’s money I could be saving or investing or spending on good food, clothes, or a trip. But to each his own!

  14. You shared a picture of the Mister! You guys look great together, Joi. I’ve been to casinos before but it’s not really my thing. I didn’t even drop a coin in a slot machine when I went to Vegas. But I’m all over the drinks, the food, and the entertainment. That book sounds very interesting. I’m going to put it on my GoodReads list.

I was never all in with SATC but Hubby was. Now Being Mary Jane is a must-see for me but not Hubby. I am very surprised at how explicit the content is given that BET has bleeped certain words from movies that I thought should pass. But it’s a new world in original programming and ratings rule. I thought that maybe Mary Jane’s brother was already backsliding and that’s why he didn’t want the party. Maybe what we saw wasn’t his first time breaking his sobriety. We’ll have to keep watching I guess!

  15. I have only seen Being Mary Jane a couple of time. But I rarely watch TV. Except Bones.

    Zero on the budget!

I would recommend AA. I have had family and friends successfully overcome addictions through AA. Although I’m not sure that overcome is the best word but I think you know what I mean. I also got a ton of babysitting jobs through AA when I was a teenager. Someone has to watch the kids while you’re in the meeting. šŸ™‚

Love the pic of the two of you!

  16. that is the cutest picture of you and your honey. he is adorbs! as for gambling, i just don’t do it. say no to throwing money down the toilet! i also kinda have an addictive/extreme personality so i often have to keep myself in check. because i’m addicted to junk food, i simply cannot have it in the house otherwise it will be inhaled.

  17. man, I never get the appeal of the casino. I get SO bored after about 5 minutes it is not my idea of fun. I never have a gambling budget LOL!

Addictions are such terrible things for family and friends to witness and deal with. As much as I try to understand it’s so hard to wrap my mind around losing everything important and destroying your life for something.

on a lighter note I’ve never heard of the BET show you mentioned and you and your mas are cutecutecute togehter!

  18. I was so laughing with that woman’s comment. Does she really think people win? Of course I know a few people do, but it’s few and far between. When we’re at a casino, I only let myself blow $40 or so. I’d much rather spend it at the restaurants or the bars or the entertainment. We have only been a handful of times though. Casinos are not really my thing.

  19. I honestly don’t watch shows like “Being Mary Jayne” or “Scandal.” I just think what we are entertained by can affect us just as much as people and other things people are more inclined to believe are more influential to us. It just literally annoys me watching people act out things like adultery and cheating. But I’m probably someone others will believe is “holier than though” because I don’t watch much on TV except things about making a home and cooking. I’m even cautious not to watch those things 24/7 because I don’t want to put myself in the position to covet anyone. My goal is to stay content with where God has us, not allowing any outside influence to make me want to go ahead of His will so that is how I focus on doing that when it comes to TV. I also want to have a pure heart. I don’t like that many things that are explicit (songs and tv shows) and they seem to show and say everything when it comes to the entertainment industry nowadays so I don’t think it would be possible for me to keep a pure heart if I allowed that stuff in so I stay away from it.

I’ve never heard of this organization but it sounds like a really good thing if you or your spouse were ever going through addiction challenges. I have a family member who dealt with this once and she never divorced her husband, but it did get to the point where she felt like she had to leave the house to protect her and her kids. I know addiction can make people do some really hurtful things. He did end up dying of what I think was an overdose after some years, so I do feel for her and her kids. We all really loved him and he was really apart of our family.

  20. I’m a fan of Mary Jane. Seeing as I put my daughter in bed well before the show comes on, I don’t mind the scenes too much. I admit that Mary Jane’s brother diagnosed me in the first 10 minutes of the episode. I started to “pen” a pitch on the subject but decided not to. Maybe it’ll end up on my blog? Maybeā€¦You already know how I feel about the Mister making an appearance. Yippee!

Addiction can cause serious havoc in a relationship and marriage. I know I’m so out of the loop, but I don’t really watch TV so I know nothing about Mary Jane.

  22. Hold up, wait a minute…how.did.I.miss.this.one?! šŸ™‚ WELL DO…as the grown folk would say! (clearing my throat). Gone girl! šŸ™‚ You and “The Mister” make quite a lovely couple darlin’!! Been hiding this one from us, huh Joi? šŸ˜€

Let’s see I really don’t have any t.v. addictions(anymore), lol! My addiction would probably have to be this dern internet. I.stay.on.it.way.too.much! Help me Jesus! As far as gambling, I don’t like parting ways with my money girl, especially not by the “luck of the draw”. I don’t like taking chances, lol! But seriously, addictions are a very serious problem in our society. The saddest part is that most times the person who is addicted usually has to hit rock bottom before they’re free.

  23. You and the Mister! Can someone say Power Couple?! You look so happy. šŸ™‚ Addiction is such a powerful topic – one that many Christians {I think} silently deal with and are too ashamed to get help. There are so many things that we don’t first think of when it comes to addition. But addiction is not just reserved for drugs, alcohol or porn. What about food, approval, attention…the list can go on. I like that you are encouraging us to take inventory of the things we may be addicted to, and to work on those things. XOXO

  24. I watched Being Mary Jane up to the addiction episode. I’m really not sure I can continue to watch it. Aside from being annoyed with Mary Jane’s ‘addiction’ to her married lover, I was so disappointed with her brother Patrick. How can he be her addiction sponsor when he upped and game up himself.

With Scandal doing the side chick thing, I was hoping Mary Jane would be different. Luckily, I’m not addicted to relationship dramas.
