We are all trying to get through our readers as quickly as possible with every spare moment we have.  Check out some tips to make sure you don’t get skipped.

20 Crucial Tactics to Making Your Blog Posts Reader-Friendly - Rx Fitness Lady

Welcome to Day 5 of the 2nd 7 Day Mini Blog Challenge Party!
Today’s Prompt –Helpful List Post

Also on the agenda is Kim’s September Sapphire Even Day Blog Challenge! Today’s prompt Efficacy. Name 3 things that you do in order to be happier, 3 things to be healthier, 3 things to be wiser.

Kim, this list was created from my wisdom & that of several bloggers before me in order to make the blogger reading this happy because they will have a healthy blog community if following these guidelines.

Did that work for you boo? 😉

20 Crucial Tactics to Making Your Blog Posts Reader-Friendly

Have a catchy title.

Address the reader directly (state a commonality, ask an emotional question, be personal).

Have an introduction so the reader knows what the post is about.

Don’t bore your audience!

Be authentic and write in YOUR OWN voice.

Keep the reading on a third grade level.

Use Pictures (Graphs, charts, etc.) to make the post interesting & give the reader a break.

Edit your pictures with PicMonkey or another source to intrigue the reader.

Add captions to the pictures to tell a story.

Establish credibility by stating facts and giving stats.

Use quotes.

Use lots of white space.

Limit your paragraphs to 3-4 sentences. Try 1 sentence for a paragraph.

Use subtitles and bold them.

Use numbered and bulleted list.

If you know you are long winded, BOLD the main points to make targets for the scanners.

Make sure your font is reader friendly. If it’s hard for you to read, it’s hard for us to read.

Add some humor.

Try adding polls or surveys.

Keep it under 750 words. (Yes, I know that’s pushing for a lot of you)

Whatever you do, please DON’T MAKE A POST WITH 1 LONG RUN ON PARAGRAPH. That is too hard to read even if it is your favorite blogger.  It’s just not going to happen!!!

  1. So many good things in that list!! I really want to do a survey and I have yet to do a giveaway!! Two things that are on the top of my list now that I was able to do my vlog thanks to this #MBC!!!

  2. That last photo totally captured the caption. LOL!!!! When I was sharing old post on TALU (where I met you) I would also fix them before I shared them again. I used to write in one long giagantamormous paragraph.

Two things that bother my eyes, curly font in another color and a cursor that’s not a cursor. Those make me not want to read a post. I have to try really hard if I am returning the favor and I’m OMGing all the way through.

  3. I can’t do the long paragraphs I will do separate posts or to be continued if I have something that long. I went over to a site the other day that had some loud punk rock music I could not find the turn off button so I had to click x in my upper right corner.

  4. Aaaaggghhh. I should have read your post before I submitted mine today. My paragraphs are way long!haha
I should know better too. If I click onto someone’s post and it is one loooong story then I click off instantly.
Or if I click onto that persons page and there is so much razzmatazz that I can’t even find how to get to that day’s post then I’ll get the hell outta Dodge!

  5. Hey Joi! As always, LOVE your blogging tips! You already know this is gonna be pinned! 😉 What do I consider a non-reader friendly post? Using you’re and your interchangeably AND their, they’re and there…I’m sorry, but that.gets.on.my.nerves! I can see every now and then, because we all have typos, right? But come on…when I see a pattern, I already know what’s up. Anywho, I must admit, when I first started blogging I did the whole ONE paragraph thing…I wish someone had told me how annoying THAT was! Lol! I still have to go back through and spice them all up. I’ll have to save that project for another day though. 🙂 Thanks for the party Joi…even though I haven’t been a great guest, lol! I know I’m suppose to B.Y.O.B(bring your own blog), but I’m enjoying feeding off of yours, lol! You’re a WONDERFUL hostess, btw(you know I had to butter you up)! Haha! 😀

  6. This is a great post. It actually kind of made me chuckle a little (in a good way) because at my day job I write and edit legal articles for a web publishing service. I literally finished a training about 40 minutes ago that contained some of your exact same points (Lots of white space, bullets, bolding, keep it short). Thanks for the reinforcement! 🙂

  7. Yes, that worked for me boo! I did something similar with my challenge today to incorporate yours. We are simpatico!

I do many of the things on your list with my blog. BUT I didn’t always–especially in the beginning. A non reader-friendly post to me is one with no images at all. No knock against people who do it, but I’m just a visual person. Surprisingly I didn’t add images to my posts for a good while when I started. I have since gone back and added at least 1 to some of those early posts. Particularly so I can add them to Pinterest and Sverve or promote them in another way.

Questions at the end of your post are the springboard for people leaving a comment. It gives them something to say and reminds them to say something. I want to try the polls and surveys. Great pic near the water. I always love your blogging tips and tools. Well done, my friend.

  8. Love this list – I fail with the 75 word thing though! And just today I ended up with a paragraph that was longer than I like but I try not to do that very often.

I keep wondering if I should change my format and put my 44 at the bottom but I’m not sure how I feel about that so I have just left it.

  9. Cracking up at the picture and the wording at the end, Joi. I’m so there.

If a post I click on is really long, I’m like Casper… out of sight, boo! I set a limit for myself of 500 words. Today’s post broke the rule big time, but I think list posts can get away with a longer word count IF there are enough photos to break up the monotony.

All of your points are solid and are concerns I keep in mind as I write.

  10. Hey Joi,
I struggle with a good title. Sometimes, I spend more time thinking of a title than what I spend writing the post. Let’s not talk about the run on for days sentences & paragraphs. Just the other day, I was visiting a blog from bloglovin, it was good and kept me interested, until I scrolled down and saw that the same paragraph was arm’s freakin’ length long…seriously.
And guess what? “Yeah, not gonna read their post today.” **scratching head** LOL

  11. This is a great list! I think I struggle with the first two a lot. Coming up with a catchy blog post title is near impossible for me. I also feel that I struggle with truly engaging the reader and really invoking emotion from them so that they want to stay and read more.

I sometimes struggle with blogs where you jump in and there is just no context because they assume everyone has read all of their posts from day one. The beginning context paragraph would be helpful in this case.

  12. Under 750 words?! So hard for me. I get it, though. I don’t really know what turns me off to reading a blog post. Usually, if it’s a blogger friend or supporter or regular, I’ll read it no matter what. I’m turned off by non-supportive and replying people. However, yes, if I saw one large paragraph with no breaks? I’d probably have to come back and read it later.

  13. Great tips. I love that you put a max of 750 words, if possible. Normally I see 250 thrown around, but that’s nearly impossible for me — I don’t think I’ve *ever* gotten a post out in 250 words or less. 750 is definitely doable [most of the time]!
